John HancockÛªs 2010 Boston
Marathon Fundraising Program Raises a Record $4.2 Million For Local Organizations
Runners raise money for non-profits
in 114th Boston Marathon
BOSTON, July 30, 2010 — John
HancockÛªs Boston Marathon Fundraising Program raised a record $4.2 million
for Boston-area non-profit and community service organizations during the
114th running of the historic race. This represents a 16 percent
increase from 2009 and a 30 percent increase from 2008.
Through the program ÛÒ now in its
25th year ÛÒ John Hancock provides select non-profits
with marathon entry numbers (or ÛÏbibsÛ) that enable funds to be raised
for their organizations. The entries were distributed this year to
more than 800 runners who raised an average of $4,732 with each bib.
As part of the overall total, employees
of John Hancock and Manulife, its parent company, participated in the employee
marathon program and raised $181,400. For the fourth consecutive
year, these employees made a difference in the lives of young people in
Boston. Funds raised through John Hancock associates, for example,
were used to expand the CompanyÛªs commitment to summer jobs for teens.
As a result of their efforts, nearly 100 additional students received jobs
this summer through a partnership with the City of Boston.
Manulife employees raised monies
for their nonprofit of choice, Habitat for Humanity Canada, raising more
ÛÏWe are proud of the generosity
of our employees, who run to give back to our community. And we are proud
that as the principal sponsor of the Boston Marathon we are able to make
it possible for so many individuals to contribute to the work of important
service organizations in greater Boston,Û said James R. Boyle, President
of John Hancock.
Locally, some of the 68 organizations
benefiting from the 2010 Boston Marathon Fundraising Program included Team
Hoyt, Partners HealthCare, Ron Burton Training Village, Mutual Funds Against
Cancer, and Horizons for Homeless Children. South Boston non-profit
neighbors of John Hancock receiving entries this year were the South Boston
Neighborhood House and the South Boston Boys & Girls Club.
In addition to the Boston Marathon
Fundraising Program, John Hancock continues to be committed to maintaining
its overall lead sponsorship of the Boston Marathon. The economic value
to the community of this event has been calculated by the Greater Boston
Convention & Visitors Bureau to be nearly $110 million, up from $74
million in 2003.
The Boston Marathon Fundraising
Program is part of John HancockÛªs $11.2 million of planned support for
Boston area community programs in 2010. In addition, the Company
will contribute more than 10,000 hours of community service through its
employee volunteer programs.
Summer Jobs for Youth
This year, John Hancock again partnered
with The Boston Globe, Boston University, and Partners HealthCare
to expand the MLK Summer Scholars program, providing more than $1,000,000
in funds and in-kind services to support more than 650 jobs throughout
the city. This commitment makes MLK Summer Scholars the largest corporate
based summer jobs program of its kind in the nation. For more information
