Cheserek Keeps Streak Alive at Foot Locker

US No.1 and undefeated
Edward Cheserak, a junior at St. Benedict’s (NJ) and US No. 2, Futsom
Zeinasellassie, a senior at North Central (IN), became fast friends at Foot
Locker as the hype lived up to expectations. There was company through the mile
in 4:48 but it was just the dynamic duo duking it out through two (9:50).

The
pace and lead alternated until Zeinasellassie surged before the final hill.
Cheserek responded and sprinted by only to have F-Z catch him at the crest. It
wasn’t until the 3-mile mark that Cheserek employed his 4:03 mile speed to
clinch victory in 14:52 with Zeinasellassie a second back. Two-time Maine state
champion Matt McClintock
, a
senior at Madison, was the top regional runner in 15th (15:32). Fairfield Prep
(CT) senior Conor Rog
was 18th
(15:35).

West Bloomfield (MI)
junior Erin Finn looked to run away with the girls race, along out front
through the mile in 5:20 and 2M in 11:08 but Lake Wisconsin (MI) senior Molly
Seidel caught Finn and then rallied from behind twice‰ÛÓon the final hill and in
the last 400m‰ÛÓto gain a 2-second victory in 17:22. Northeast runners from the
chase pack piled in next with W. Genesee (NY) sophomore Laura Leff
third in 17:34 and four-time ME state champion and
Kennebunk senior Abbey Leonardi

fourth in 17:36. Massachusetts state champion Catarina Roche
, a junior at Peabody, placed seventh in 17:38.
