Abiyot Endale Sets Course Record
in 2012 ING Hartford Marathon;
New England Finest Runner Hilary
Dionne Wins Women’s Race
The 19th annual ING Hartford Marathon hosted more than 16,000
participants, who crossed the finish line in downtown Hartford’s Bushnell Park
after marathon, half-marathon or 5K races. Abiyot Endale, an Ethiopian runner
currently living in High Falls, NY, won the marathon, setting a new course
record of 2:15:35. He was followed
by Kenyan runner Mathew Kiplagat, of White Plains, NY.
runner Matt Pelletier, of West Greenwich, RI, placed third with a time of
2:19:33. New England’s Finest runners swept the top three women’s marathon
places with Hilary Dionne of Charlestown, RI, winning in 2:40:34, setting a PR
in her first appearance in Hartford.

Finest Elite program, which recognizes talented runners from the region. [Ed. note: like as in $3K for Dionne for the win, another $3K as the NEF bonus, another $1K for breaking 2:41 and another $1K for the NEF record for a total of $8,000

Lyndsay Willard, 33, Somerville, MA – NEF

Maureen Terwilliger, 45, Guilford, CT – NEF
In the 13.1 mile men’s half
marathon, Philemon Kiplan Terer won with a time of 1:05:42. Second place finisher Benard Langat,
came in at 1:05:49. Terer and Langat train together in Santa Fe, NM, and are
both originally from Kenya. With a time of 1:06:24, Jonny Wilson, of Falmouth,
ME, took third place in the ING Hartford Half Marathon. Wilson was the first finisher in the
New England’s Finest Elite program.
Women’s half marathon winner
Stephanie Reilly of Northbridge, MA, won with a time of 1:15:40. Katie Moulton, a New England Finest
runner out of Providence, RI, came in second place with a time of 1:18:05, and Lydia
Carrick, of Wilmington, DE, took third place with a time of 1:19:13.
In the 5K men’s race, New
Britain, CT, runner Samuel Alexander took first place with a time of 15:28.
With a time of 15:39, 2011 winner Stephen Pretak came in second. Claiming third place this year, Garrett
Ash of Manchester, CT, came in at 16:02.
Women’s 5K first place
finisher was Jeanne Mack, of Bristol, RI, with a time of 18:03. Gabrielle Cyr
came in second with a time of 18:14. With a time of 19:12 to win third place
was Maria Varela of Glastonbury, CT.
