ING Hartford accepting "Elite Inspiration" Team Nominees

Hartford Marathon Foundation Recognizes Inspirational Athletes

Nominations accepted for 2012 Elite Inspiration Team at ING Hartford Marathon

April 2012, Glastonbury, CT – The Hartford Marathon Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2nd annual Elite Inspiration Team. The Team was created to recognize the many amazing personal journeys and experiences that compel runners to take part in ING Hartford Marathon events. The Foundation is accepting nominations for truly inspiring personalities and compelling personal stories from runners participating in the 5K, Half Marathon or Full Marathon. Winners will be provided with Elite level benefits including complimentary hotel stay, Pasta Supper and marathon apparel. The ING Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K will run on Saturday, October 13, 2012 in Bushnell Park, Hartford.

Nominations will be accepted based on personal achievements, positive leadership roles within the community and a dedication to living healthy lifestyles.  Runners can nominate themselves or others who they feel have a compelling inspirational story to share surrounding their participation in the 2012 ING Hartford Marathon. Profiles can be submitted from any age or skill level but should highlight the story behind the runner. Nomination forms are available on the ‘events’ page for the ING Hartford Marathon at www.INGHartfordMarathon.com. Nominations are accepted April 23- through June 30. Winners will be notified in July.

Last year, the inaugural Elite Inspiration Team comprised of 11 members representing various backgrounds, locations and experiences.  The team members’ personal journeys and accomplishments were nothing short of inspiring, from dramatic weight loss accomplishments and overcoming health challenges to training aboard the USS Hartford out at sea.

“We had an incredible group in our Elite Inspiration Team last year and we’re privileged to welcome new nominees and learn more about the amazing individuals that take part in ING Hartford Marathon activities.” said Beth Shluger, Executive Director of the Hartford Marathon Foundation.

The ING Hartford Marathon has received national recognition for its commitment to providing all runners with exceptional services, including award-winning post-race food and extensive efforts to off-set the environmental impact of the event. A repeat recipient of recognition by the Road Runners Club of America, the Marathon has earned State Championship and Regional Championship status.

some time ago the New England Journal of Medicine published a major airlcte showing that 13 percent of runners in the 2002 Boston Marathon might have suffered from hyponatremia, a dangerous condition caused by drinking too much fluid. The figure was surprising because Boston draws the best, fittest, and most experienced runners in the world. If Boston has a 13-percent rate of hyponatremia, what is it at other marathons?they recommend you drink 400 to 800 ml/hr (13.5 to 27 fluid ounces)

Dean,I met you and Brian tonight near Santa Cruz with my wife Ky and baby Gracie. We soettpd you down a treacherous section of Old San Jose Road into Soquel, or at least we tried I told you briefly of my story, how both of my parents unexpectedly died last year, how that, watching your film, (and of course my wife and baby) totally inspired me.To jog your memory, I asked if I could tell you a short story of how you inspired me. I lost 40 pounds and reversed my type-2 diabetes, to where I'm no longer even considered diabetic and am totally off of all medications. I still have a long way to go and many goals 3 10k's this summer and the Big Sur half marathon in November . 26.2 is a goal for 2011 for over 15 years, I've had a recurring dream of me running, free not away from anything but just for the joy and freedom of it Meeting you makes my dream seem so much more tangible somehow. It was a terrific blessing to meet you, a real-life hero. My wife Ky was just as thrilled as me to meet you. We will treasure this memory. It will be fun to show Gracie the picture of us and tell her the story when she's older. You and Brian were tremendously gracious to give us a few minutes of your time as darkness was coming on strong, and I didn't want to waste a minute. We wanted to escort you but thought that would freak you out a little bit, so we drove on I wish I could have offered you an ice cold beer, but Ky reminded me we should have offered you a jacket it was pretty cold out. We prayed and will continue to pray for your safety (and everyone with you, such as your good friend Brian) and for you and your family to be richly blessed. I will keep my eye on your adventures that continue to inspire me and countless others, and I plan to keep you updated from time to time on my victories. I won't drink out of my 26.2 coffee mug until I complete my first marathon I'll send you a picture when I do!I want to thank you for who you are, and the example you set. I am totally inspired and motivated by you to reach and strive for my own dreams and goals, and to push my beyond my own perceived limits.God continue to bless you Dean Karnazes! Thank you!Matt BradberrySanta Cruz, CA
