Setting the Record Straight

Masters machine Chris "Can't Miss" Spinney was clearly revved up post-race at Paddy's Shillelagh Shuffle 3M in Newton on Oct. 16. NER was accosted by the normally fun-loving Mr. Spinney and his thuggish Whirlaway posse soon after entering Paddy's.

"Who writes your stuff on the website!?" Spinney bellowed while being restrained by several of the wait staff. After a quick mediation by Irish Tom Hurley it was deduced that the offending article was none other than the "Cape Cod Marathon Revs Up" press release linked off our home page.

The offending passage: "McNamara and former CCM winner (1996) Jim Garcia are among the favorites for the Master's titles."

Hello! Spinney is the defending Masters champion at the Cape, having run 2:38:56 to place 6th overall three weeks after running 2:34:49 (4th Master) at the Chicago Marathon.

When the Cape arrives this year, it will be three weeks since Spinney ran 2:34:29 to place as 3rd Master at this year's Chicago Marathon (which will be featured with article and photos in the Nov/ Dec issue of NER).

Anyone looking to bet against Spinney and for Gentleman Jim Garcia should bring their wager to the NER booth at the Cape Cod Marathon Expo. For even $, we'll take both Spinney and teammate Paul Hammond (with due respect to Gentleman Jim who we don't believe to be in peak form.
