Somerville, MA - June 15, 2005 - On July 10, the Somerville Road
Runners will be hosting the 14th annual Summer Steamer road race, a
4.0-mile course beginning at Khoury's State Spa on Broadway and
winding through the streets of East Somerville. This year's race will be a
special day for the community, as three new events have been added.
Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone has graciously offered to be our guest
and victim in the Steamer's first annual dunk tank event. Test the political
waters by taking a shot at the mayor.
This year's race will also feature a hot dog eating contest. Whether or
not you want to challenge Takeru Kobayashi's world record of 53 dogs
in 12 minutes, this is a great opportunity to experience the world of
competitive eating.
Also, there will be a special 1/4-mile race for kids 11 years and under, to
be held before the main event. All participants in the kids' race must be
pre-registered.
T-shirts will be given to all runners who pre-register. And don't forget the
post-race festivities, with entertainment by the IT Band, the club's very
own runners/musicians! Proceeds from all events will benefit St.
Benedict's Little Flower School.
For a
Race Application/Register OnLine e-
mail steamer@srr.org or call 617-524-1121. Applications
are also available the day of the race.
Somerville Road Runners has served the Boston running community
since 1996, appealing to runners of all ages and abilities. No one is too
old, too slow or too large! SRR sponsors five major road races every
year, including the Summer Steamer, that attract thousands of runners
from across New England. Committed to the community in which many
of its members live, SRR donated more than $21,000 to various non-
profit organizations, such as the Somerville High Track Pac, Somerville
Homeless Coalition, Somerville Auxiliary Police, Project Soup, and
various charities in Cambridge and Wakefield. Many members of SRR
volunteer for a variety of local charity events, including the Jimmy Fund
Boston Marathon Walk. For more information, visit http://www.srr.org or
