August 20, 2002

From race press release.

BOSTON (August 2002) - The world's top adventure racers will assemble in Boston, MA, to compete in the third stop of the BALANCE(r) Bar 24-Hour Adventure. The BALANCE Bar 24-Hour Adventure made its first two stops in Phoenix, AZ and Portland, OR. The series of adventure races that tests each participant's physical endurance and mental tenacity takes place the morning of Saturday, August 24th and will finish in the early afternoon on August 25th. The remaining cities on the BALANCE Bar 24-Hour Adventure include New York, NY on October 5th and the national championship in Malibu, CA on November 16th.

"Our team is very excited and looking to make history by taking part in the first ever adventure race in the Boston Metropolitan area," said Bob Schulz Captain of Team BALANCE Bar. "The Harbor Islands are one of the most unique settings in the Northeast and will pose unique challenges for the teams that will be competing there."

The core of the BALANCE Bar 24-Hour Adventure will take place on Boston Harbor Islands National Park area. Total mileage will be approximately 80 miles and take the teams from 14 to 36 hours to complete. The varying terrain (water-to-land) will pose a unique challenge to adventure racers. The Boston Harbor Islands consist of 34 islands that lie within the large "C" shape of Boston Harbor. The landmass of the Boston Harbor Islands totals approximately 1,600 acres extending seaward 11 miles from downtown Boston forming a natural transition between the open ocean and the settled coast. Disciplines for the Boston BALANCE Bar 24-Hour Adventure are kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, in-line skating and navigation (land and water).

Competitor divisions include: Elite Coed, Coed, Male, Female, Corporate or Masters Coed (combined age of 120+). The BALANCE Bar 24-Hour Adventure offers the elite coed divisions a cash prize of $15,000 per event with a total purse of $110,000.

The BALANCE(r) Bar 24-Hour Adventure is televised on the Outdoor Life Network in one-hour feature presentations. The Boston, MA, event will air October 16, 2002 10:00 PM EST.
