Global Warming Series Hits Boston Sept. 14
The Race to Stop Global Warming Series, 2002
by Lorien Sekora
The Green House Network's Third Annual Race to Stop
Global Warming is a national Earth Day-related 8K Run
and 5K Fitness Walk which presents an opportunity to draw
public attention toward creating solutions to global warming
in a fun, family-oriented setting. Formerly in Portland,
Seattle, and Denver, the RSGW series is expanding to
include the Twin Cities and Boston (Sept. 14) in
2002.
"I've led the Portland Race to Stop Global Warming since it
began in 2000. As a runner, I depend on the natural
environment, so making the connection between being an
athlete and being an advocate for the health of the planet is
a simple one," states 3-time New York City Marathon Winner
Alberto Salazar. "I'm proud to be a part of this event
and excited to watch it grow each year as more cities come
on board."
Supported by companies who are actively developing
environmentally aware practices, such as Nike and Aveda,
the RSGW brings a diverse group of individuals from the
fitness, business, and environmental communities together
for a day of public collaboration and prizes.
"I am honored to participate in the First Annual Twin Cities
Race to Stop Global Warming," states 2-time Olympian
Bob Kennedy. "As an athlete who has worked hard
to achieve my goals, I know how important our personal,
local and global health is. Protecting, conserving and
preserving our natural resources requires the same depth
of commitment and passion."
"We're proud to be a part of the Race to Stop Global
Warming because it's a positive example of how
businesses, non-profit organizations, civic leaders and
community members are coming together to bring
awareness to what is one of the most important
environmental issues in the world today", states Nike
Director of Sustainable Development, Sarah Severn.
"The Green House Network's Race to Stop Global Warming
is one way for individuals, families and communities to
learn more about global warming and become active on this
issue," says Aveda President Dominique Conseil. "We are
honored to be a continuing sponsor of these events."
Over the past two years, the GHN race series has
succeeded in raising both awareness and funds to address
the problem of global warming. In turn, the GHN reinvests
all of the proceeds toward furthering its mission to educate
and unite people in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions.
