BOSTON, Mass. - The 13th annual Mayor's Cup lived up to
its billing as a
premier competition for the City of Boston and one of the
most competitive
cross country events in the eastern United States with
representation by
many top level clubs and a record turnout at this year's
event. The addition
of the Franklin Park 5k to the event schedule also gave local
runners a
unique cross country opportunity. On this sunny, fall day,
Keith Kelly and
Kristin Chisum became the new Mayor's Cup Cross Country
champions and the
first two competitors to represent New Balance as
champions at the event. Bryn Mawr Running Club topped the men's team
competition while the meet's
presenter, Boston Athletic Association, won the women's
title. Victorious
teams received the William J. Squires Trophy, named for the
legendary
Boston-area running coach and inspiration for the meet.
With more than 700 participants in this year's races, the
13th edition drew
both world class athletes and - with the addition of the
Franklin Park 5k -
local runners seeking perhaps their single cross country
racing opportunity
of the year. For the sixth year, the Boston Athletic Association
and adidas
partnered together to make the event one of Boston's most
popular Mayor's
Cup competitions. USA Track & Field-New England directed
the meet for the
Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the cross
country races
concluded the Mayor's Cup calendar of events for the year.
Proceeds from
this year's event will be directed to Boston Parks and
Recreation for the
preservation and maintenance of Bear Cage Hill, a
signature location along
the cross country course.
In the men's 8-kilometer championship race, Keith Kelly, 25,
took an early
lead and continued to widen the margin between himself
and last year's
champion, Sandu Rebencuic of the U.S. Army, over the
duration of the race.
After running closely with Rebencuic, Paul Rielly and U.S.
Olympian Mark
Coogan for the first mile, Kelly, the 2000 NCAA Cross
Country Champion from
Providence College, passed the 5k mark in 14:55, at which
point he led
Rebencuic, by 12 seconds. Kelly, from Ireland, broke the
tape in 23:48,
thirty seconds before second-place Rebencuic. Rielly, also
from Ireland and
of Providence College, and Coogan battled one another for
third place in the
final moments, with Rielly pulling ahead for a four second
lead over Coogan
at the finish. Cain Williams of the Boston Athletic
Association finished in
fifth place.
With 61 total points (lowest score of a team's top five
finishers), Bryn
Mawr Running Club was awarded the men's team
championship trophy for the
first time at the Mayor's Cup. The Boston Athletic Association
placed second
with 110 points and Reebok Boston rounded out the top
three teams with 165
points. 11 college teams or post-collegiate running clubs
fielded teams.
In the women's 5-kilometer race, Chisum, a consistent
top-10 finisher at
previous Mayor's Cup races, broke through at this year's
race to capture
the championship title in 16:40. Chisum, 30, finished
second at the 2000
Mayor's Cup, third in 1997, second in 1996, sixth in 1995
and in ninth place
at the 1994 race. Running just off of course record pace,
Chisum, a former
U.S. champion at 15-kilometers and Princeton University
graduate, ran
closely with New Balance teammate Blake Russell (fourth
place in 1997) early
in the race, with Russell taking a slight lead as the two
passed mile one in
5:03. Russell, one of the country's top harriers over the past
five years,
and Chisum exchanged the lead position until
approximately the two mile
mark, where Chisum made her move to the front and
maintained the top spot
until reaching the breaktape in 16:40, 12 seconds ahead of
Russell. Sarah
Dupre, the 2000 Mayor's Cup Champion, of the Boston
Athletic Association was
third in 17:01 while teammate Amy Lyman was fourth in
17:20. The 2000
National Club Championships winner, Sarah Hann finished
fifth.
Dupre and Lyman led the Boston Athletic Association to the
women's team
title with 45 points while Reebok Boston finished in second
with 108 points
and Dartmouth College garnered third with 206 points.
Chris Barnicle, 15, was the first-ever Franklin Park 5k men's
champion,
finishing in 16:14, and Lauren Phillips, 21, was the first
female winner in
20:26. The Boston Athletic Association took top team honors
with 21 points,
while Athletics East was second with 29 points and Greater
Boston Track Club
finished in third place with 52 points.
This year's Mayor's Cup Cross Country races drew 714
finishers, including
310 in the youth 1.1-mile boys and girls races. The first
Mayor's Cup in
1990 drew a field of nine finishers.
