The 11th annual edition of Rhode Island's only full distance marathon on Sunday, October 12 at Providence will be run as the Cerrone Ocean State Marathon. The event, which includes an inaugural half marathon, was without title sponsorship since late last year. The Cerrone Auto Group is a dealership headquartered in Attleboro, MA.
I am extremely pleased, proud and relieved to announce the Cerrone commitment to the Ocean State Marathon, said Gerry Beagan, race director. When Al Cerrone read the latest story detailing our continued, fruitless search for a title sponsor he telephoned personally and asked what he could do. He said he was surprised that no other company had come forward to sponsor the races. He was sincere, serious and unassuming about his willingness to assist us in our efforts to present a first class, national class event that will give every runner the best possible experience over either the marathon or half marathon distance. The marathon, which is run on a figure eight course entirely within the city limits, shares billing with the half marathon which will cover the first 11.1 miles of the marathon route and then wind back to the common finish at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Both races will start together at 7:55 am from the State Capitol. Over 2000 runners are expected to participate in the two races which comprise a veritable tour of the Renaissancei city with numerous spectator vantage points.
The Ocean State Marathon Health and Fitness Fair will be held on Saturday, October 11 at the Rhode Island Convention Center from noon to 6pm. The health and fitness fair features running, sports and fitness displays, an opportunity for entrants to pick up numbers, t-shirts and runner packets. There will also be a pasta dinner from 5pm to 7 pm.
The Cerrone Ocean State Marathon and Half Marathon are USATF sanctioned and certified and will feature ChampionChip timing by Granite State Race Services. The marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier. There are no field limits for either event and entries will be accepted up to, and including, race weekend.
