Olympians & Regional Elite on Tap for adidas Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 27

World-class field on tap for adidas Boston Indoor Games
Jan. 27

BOSTON - At least 20 Olympic or World Championship medalists will be in town Jan. 27 for the adidas Boston Indoor Games, the first stop on the 2002 Indoor USA Track & Field Golden Spike Tour. The meet, formerly known as the New Balance Invitational, will begin at 4 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, 1350 Tremont St., Boston.

Led by Nick Hysong, 2000 gold medalist in the pole vault, the event will feature four-time Olympics qualifier and world silver medalist Regina Jacobs, who broke the American indoor 1000-meter record here in 2000; Adam Goucher, 5000-meter Olympic finalist; Terrence Trammell, 2000 Olympic silver medalist in the 110-meter hurdles; and two-time Olympic high jumper Amy Acuff.

"In the seven years we've been putting on this meet, we've always prided ourselves in attracting many of the best indoor-track athletes from all over the world," said meet director Mark Wetmore of Global Athletics and Marketing. "Being in Boston, we're also lucky that some of the best live right in our backyard."

Among those with Boston-area ties expected to compete are Jonathon Riley, the reigning NCAA 5000-meter outdoor champion from Stanford (Brookline); Andy Powell, who will be part of Stanford's distance medley relay; (Easton); Jen Toomey, a US team member at 800 meters for last year's World Indoor Championship (Salem); and Calvin Davis, the surprise 1996 Olympic bronze medalist in the 400-meter hurdles (Dorchester).

Besides a chance to see the kickoff of the Golden Spike Tour, a four-meet series that will culminate in the 2002 US Indoor Track & Field Championships in New York City on March 1-2, one lucky ticket-holder will also win a three-night stay in the Bahamas plus two round-trip air tickets from Boston, courtesy of USAirways.
