INDIANAPOLIS – Sanya Richards has been named USA Track & Field’s
Athlete of the Week after becoming the first athlete ever to win a
200-400 double last weekend at the IAAF World Athletics Final in
Stuttgart, Germany.
The 2008 Olympic bronze
medalist, Richards won her third straight women’s 400m title Sunday,
easily outdistancing gold medalist Christine Ohuruogu to cross the line
in 50.41 seconds. On Saturday, Richards won over a strong field in the
women’s 200, taking the victory in 22.50.
Now in
its seventh year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to
recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF
names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF
website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the
previous week.
