Joan Samuelson USATF’s AOW After US-50 5K Record

INDIANAPOLIS – Joan Samuelson has
been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting an
American record for the W50 age group Sunday at the 2008 USA 5 km
Championships in Providence, R.I.

The 1984 Olympic
Games marathon gold medalist and a National Track & Field Hall of
Famer, Samuelson covered the 5 km course in a W50 age-group record 17
minutes 25 seconds
to place 22nd overall in the championship field. The previous record of 17:28 was set by Shirley Matson in 1991.

Now
in its seventh year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to
recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF
names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF
website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the
previous week.
