I.O.C. KO’s Chicago’s Olympic Bid–Rio Is In!

Despite lobbying by both US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, I.O.C. President Jacques Rogge made the announcement that the US had been eliminated from consideration following the first round of voting for the 2016 Olympic Games.

To say the crowds watching in Daley Plaza were stunned is an understatement. The US, along with Rio de Janeiro were considered the favorites to host the 2016 Summer Games.

Chicago’s bid leaders spent close to $50 million on the city’s Olympic gambit. This is the second straight Olympic bid disappointment for the US as New York was ousted in the second round of voting for the 2012 Olympics (which went to London).

Rio is the first South American city to ever host the Olympics.
