Just last week, dominant Pub Series Senior Ken Leinbach not only had to withdraw from the Pub Series but also from a spot on the new NER All Star Flying at Fifty relay team for Cape Cod.
Being a doctor, Ken noticed quickly the sings of a detached retina and brought himself to an emergency room where successful surgery has rendered everything A-OK…but not for a jarring activity such as running.
That Ken would win the Senior division was something of a fait acompli as he held a healthy lead and owns the Senior course record of 15:56 (set in 2007) at Paddy’s, this Sunday’s (Oct. 18) Pub Series Grand Finale.
This sets up a one-race winner-take-all battle between Hurtin’ For Certain’s Paul Corcoran (the Pub Series original 40+ winner from 1998) and defending champ Dave Wessman of the Thirsty Irish Runners.
Equally dominant among Female Seniors, an injury to Greater Lowell’s Patty Foltz has Quincy’s Joanne Morris and Catherine Farrell tied going into Paddy’s.
For further intrigue, the women’s race has the BAA trio of Lara Johnson, Mimi Fallon and Sarah Healy separated by 4 points. Defending champion Fallon is just one point behind Johnson with Healy (women’s winner of the last 2 Pub Races) 3 points behind Fallon.
AND FOR FURTHER INTRIGUE: Will Whirlaway’s Joe Navas (as stated by Joe) follow Coach McGrinch’s advice and run the Bay State Marathon the morning of Paddy’s and then line up scant hours later on the Newton Speedway (last we heard, he planned on it). If so, things are looking good for Chris Teague, who loves this raw Liverpoolian weather and needs to displace Navas with 7 runners for Pub Supremacy.
And what’s with the weather? You’d think we were headed down the Cape to Irish Village for another wash-out.
