Boston, MA ‰ÛÓ The Boston Athletic
Association (B.A.A.) announced today that some of the fastest scholastic runners
from the eight cities and towns of the historic Marathon course will compete in
the B.A.A. Invitational Mile. The event is held at the finish line of the Boston
Marathon on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. Sixteen boys and sixteen girls,
two from each city and town along the Boston Marathon course, will race around
the block and cross the finish line four times in front of thousands of cheering
spectators. The eight cities and towns are Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham,
Natick, Wellesley,
Newton, Brookline,
and Boston.

The girls’ field is highlighted by
defending champion and Boston Globe All-Scholastic runner Margo Gillis. Last
year, Gillis’ time of 5:10.6 gave her victory in the inaugural event. Joining
her to represent the City of Newton is Melanie Fineman whose personal best
in the mile of 4:57 is the field’s fastest. In the boys’ field, Ezra Lichtman of
Newton (p.b. of 4:27), Yuji Wakimoto of Newton (p.b. of 4:31), Ben Groleau of Framingham (p.b of 4:33),
and Cameron Fairbanks of Hopkinton, (p.b. of 4:33) will toe the start line with
fastest personal best mile times. Field lists to date are included below.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to
the cities and towns that so graciously host the Boston Marathon, the scholastic
mile races are just one way the B.A.A. showcases the running talent that resides
within them,” said Guy Morse, executive director of the B.A.A. “In addition to
the professional races, our scholastic athletes will help Marathon spectators
get into the running spirit for the 114th Boston
Marathon.”

New for 2010, the Boston Athletic
Association has added a 1,000 meter race for middle school-aged runners from the
eight cities and towns. The inaugural races will also include two
representatives from each city and town, and will finish at the Boston Marathon
finish line. Participants of the 5K and the Boston Marathon are encouraged to
watch all of the races, and bleacher seating in front of the Boston Public
Library will be open. For more information on the B.A.A. Mile, the
