Somers Smith named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS
ÛÒ Linda Somers Smith has been named USA Track & FieldÛªs Athlete of
the Week after setting a pending U.S. Masters record Sunday at the Rock
‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Jose, Calif.
A
1996 Olympic marathoner, the 49-year old Somers Smith finished as the
runner-up in 1:13:32, which is a pending U.S. Masters W45 record. Her
performance bettered the pending record of 1:16:30 posted by Colleen De
Reuck at the 2010 Houston Half Marathon.
Now in
its ninth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to
recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names
a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website.
Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous
week.
