Wind Aplenty at MV 20

How windy was it for the 14th Annual Martha’s Vineyard 20M on Feb 20th?

The Cambridge Running
Club’s Chad Carr would claim victory among men, while 2008 women’s champion
Katie Aldrich from the Finger Lakes region of NY made a triumphant return to
the island (perhaps the story of this race is what would transpire behind
Aldrich).

The wind was so fierce on the causeway from 7-miles to 9-miles that
the tableau consisted of a green sea topped by whitecaps on one side of the
road, with plumes of water vapor borne aloft from Sengekontacket Pond on the
other.

Aldrich had a sizable
lead at this point and commented to a few flash frozen spectators, “It’s great
when you think you’re at mile seven and you’re at mile eight.”

The brawling gusts, a tailwind boon to runners during the first 10 miles along the ocean, we’re a real detriment during the second half of the course as the coursed turned inland approaching Edgartown.

Party Likes Its 1999: Two 12 year-old records were upended. Female runner-up Emily Bryans, 43, of Schenectady, NY ran negative splits of 1:07:20/1:05:32 (into a stiff headwind) to go from 6th to 2nd and upend Lynne Robillaird’s 12 year-old Masters record of 2:15:18. Bryans ran 2:12:52.

Whirlaway’s Chris Spinney, 51, also toppled a record from 1999. Spinney ran 2:06:16 to erase Don Bates’ previous Senior standard of 2:07:54.

After 14 years at the fore, co-race director’s Bill Brown and Kathy O’Sullivan are calling it quits (sort of), but don’t panic, the show will go on. Much more in the March/April issue of NER.
