With 3300+ runners lined up by Victoria’s Secret in Patriots
Place, the second Independence Day 10K took off in hot conditions under a
bright sun but with less humidity than 2010.
Bill Rodgers was in the throng but it was 28 year-old
Olympic triathlete Jarrod Shoemaker who was pretty much announced as the winner
before the race even started.
Maynard’s Shoemaker, winner of a previous BAA 5K and the
Mayor’s Cup 8K XC race in Franklin Park, wasn’t fazed, rocketing out to a 30
second lead by the time he hit the first mile in 4:49.
Peabody’s Alex Gomes, 22, entertained a thought of trying to
catch Shoemaker but as he later admitted, “It didn’t last long.”
“I knew it would be hot so I was looking for a good tempo
run, stay hydrated and conserve some energy,” said Shoemaker, who’ll be looking
for an Olympic Triathlon qualifier in London this August. “It’s a great course
but it was hot out there. The coolest part was coming through the tunnel into
the stadium.
Shoemaker’s time of 32:03 eclipses the 33:42 run by Winona,
Minnesota’s Jon-Michael Brandt last year. Gomes finished second in 33:29 with
Methuen’s Kevin Alliette third in 34:30.
What are the odds that the female winner would also be from
Winona, MN? Pretty good actually as former Wisconsin runner Megan Ping arrived
at the Gillette Stadium 50-yard first in 39:18.
Canton’s Kara Lynne Leonard was with Ping as they passed the
first mile in 5:50 but fell back before midway to place second in 39:49 with 19
year-old Anisa Arsenault third in 40:43 and RI’s Tara Cardi the top Master in
fourth at 41:21.
Megan’s husband, Ryan, placed 6th among men in 36:12. “We
brought our three kids along to see Boston, Gillette Stadium and then the
fireworks,” said Ryan.
The previous day (Sunday) 550 kids took part in races at Gillette
despite the threat of thunderstorms. The Ping’s daughter, Grace, won the
7-year-old’s race.
