Westchester Track Club (NY) teammates Solomon Too and
frontrunning Folisho Tuko would exchange places at 22 miles with Too racing to
a PR 2:21:03 and Tuko following in 2:21:33.
Defending champion Michael Wardian, who’d been dropped by
Dan Vassallo (MA) and Justin Fyffe (VT) halfway into the race, caught back up
at 22 miles and then chased the lead duo.
“I knew (Too) was basically a 2:24 guy but he ran much
better than that today. I should have started moving earlier but that’s what
makes the marathon so interesting, it’s a bit of a guessing game,” said
Wardian, who arrived third in 2:22:18ÛÓover two minutes faster than when he won
in 2010.
The women’s race went to 22 year-old Erica Jesseman of
Scarborough, ME in her inaugural marathon. “I took a chance,” said Jesseman
after leaving Albany, NY’s Ashley Gorr and Dover, NH’s Lesley Hocking at 11
miles.
Jesseman would bag the Olympic Trials qualifier (2:46) in
2:45-flat with Gorr also achieving the standard in 2:45:31. Hocking would run a
PR 2:48:04.
In the half marathon, New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith
(Providence, RI) broke her own course record of 1:11:32 in 1:11:18 in a final
tune-up before the NYC Marathon.
Former Iona runner Mathew Kiplagat won the men’s race in
1:06:23. Battling a leg twinge, Andover’s Nate Jenkins pulled in second at 1:08:16.
