Rupp Sets 2M AR, Cain Wins Mile at BU

While flirting with Kenenisa Bekele’s world record of 8:04.35 with a first mile in 4:01.6, Galen Rupp nonetheless held on to break the US 2M record of 8:09.49 set by Bernard Lagat. Rupp ran 8:07.41 a week after lowering Lagat’s US 5000m record to 13:01.26. The B.A.A.’s Brian Harvey would actually place 2nd in the race at 8:51.48 with Whirlaway’s Nick Karwoski 3rd in 8:51.55.

The loaded women’s mile race included Oregon Distance Project runners Mary Cain and Jordan Hasay in the first of 11 sections. The only person preventing a 1-2 finish was Dartmouth NCAA champion Abbey D’Agostino. Mary Slaney’s AR was safe (by 4-seconds) but Mary Cain’s winning 4:24.1 was just 1/100ths of a second off the World Jr. record while breaking her own US Jr. mark by 4-seconds. In the duel for second, D’Agostino prevailed in 4:28.31 to Hasay’s 4:28.37.
