Three
Olympians coming to Faxon Law New Haven 20K
Haven: As host of the USA
Men’s and Women’s 20K Championship, the 37th annual Faxon
Law New Haven Labor Day Road Race features their best
elite field to date.
This
year the women’s field features three US Olympians and two
former Faxon Law New Haven 20K Champions. Providence’s Molly
Huddle, the versatile 2012 U.S. Olympian in the 5K,
currently holds the American 5K record and won this year’s
7 mile US National Championship (Davenport, IA). The field
also includes 2008 U.S. Olympian and 2005 Faxon Law 20K
Champion, California’s
Blake Russell. The third Olympian, Providence’s
Amy Hastings, won
the 2014 US
1OK Championship (Atlanta)
and also represented the US in the
10,000 meters in the 2012 Olympics. Retuning to defend her
2013 20K Faxon Law 20K title is Minnesota’s Meghan
Payton. Colorado’s Amy
Van Alstine, the 2014 U.S. Cross Country Champion (Boulder), and Arizona’s
Kellyn Johnson, 2014 25K Champion (Grand Rapids), are
expected to finish near the top on Labor Day.
The
men’s field is also competitive this year. Michigan’s
Christo Landry, has won US Championships this year at the
25K (Grand Rapids), 10K (Atlanta), and 10 mile (Washington
D.C.) distances. Colorado’s
Sean Qigley, this year’s 7 mile National Champion (Davenport, IA)
and past Faxon Law 20K champion (2010), returns to New Haven
this year. Oregon’s
Shadrack Biwott (2nd place 2013 Faxon Law New Haven 20K) and Utah’s Luke Puskedra (2nd
place 2012 Faxon Law New Haven 20K) are
expected to challenge for the top spot.
“This is the first
time we have had three US Olympians compete at the same
time in the women’s field,” said John Tolbert, Elite
Athlete Coordinator. “With a cool day the Women’s 20K
American record could be in jeopardy.”
The female
and male 20K winners will again be receiving the Ryan Shay
Memorial Award. Ryan passed away while participating in
the 2007 Olympic Trials Marathon in New York City. The award is in
recognition of Ryan’s hard work and dedication to the
sport, as well as longtime support of the New Haven Road
Race. Ryan ran
the 20K for four years from 2004-2007 and placed won in
2004.
This
year’s race features a prize purse of nearly $45,000 in
prize money and will be held on Labor Day, September 1st,
on the New Haven Green. This year’s event begins with the
Kids Run at 8:15
a.m. and is followed by the 20K and 5K at 8:40 a.m. A crowd of 7,000
runners are expected to participate in the event. For
