Ruben Under The Radar: No Races But A Certified 10M PR at Newburyport

Two things conspired to afford Whirlaway’s Ruben Sanca a 10M PR on a certified course professional timed by Bay State Race Services.

Ruben had been training for the Philadelphia Marathon. On Tuesday her got word the race was cancelled. Regroup, shoot for a fall half marathon (if there are any) and set a new sight at the Houston Marathon in Jan. 2021.

(2): John Molvar, asst. coach at UMass-Lowell for the past decade (Ruben’s an alum) has been coaching/advising Ruben fo the past 9 months. Race cancellation on Tuesday, how about a tough time trail on Wednesday?

With dual citizenship, Ruben, 33, represented Cape Verde at 5,000m at the London Olympics. On Wednesday evening, July 15, her ran a 10M PR of 50:24 on the certified Yankee Homecoming 10M in Newburyport.

He missed the Cape Verde 10M national record buy a tantalizing one second. Ruben had runners company him at various sections of the course but credits the bikers who restrained traffic as the reason he ran to a PR.

As Molvar relayed to NER: “Ruben accomplished this off of purely base training with no workouts or races. He got great pace help from 2:24:10 marathoner Shane Whalen (runner-up at 2019 Cape Cod Marathon/USATF-NE GP) for miles 1-5 and 9-10 and 2:33 marathoner Tim Poitras through the tough hills of miles 6-8 in an uphill 15:21.

Also 4 time Newburyport winner Buddy Bostick and UML alum Dan Sawicki kept the the traffic clear on the course on their bikes and only got yelled at a few times. See the video and post race interview by Josh Molvar Here
