Great day at Evan’s Run…post-race; otherwise, in a word: Brutal. So congrats to the survivors of Pub Series Race uno, all 306 finishers out of 505 entrants, the best entries for the race since 2014, with over half a million raised for autism awareness.
How bad was it? Former Norwell HS and Amherst College harrier Danielle Griffin, 26, ran her first mile in 5:37 and her 2nd in 6:21, eking out a victory over former Pub Series women’s champ Christina Campbell (18:48 to 18:53) the de facto leader as Griffin currently lives in DC and is visiting. Behind Campbell, HFC teammates Erin Brown and Nicole Nelson followed in short order.
CSUer Patrick Bugbee had a quartet of company in the first mile (5:15) but a 10s gap after the second in 5:30. An easy victory for the bearded one in 17:06 although SRR’s Pickle Power in 2nd (17:37) notes he’s just ramping it up.
Despite the 80˚ temp and high humidity at the start, a big shoutout to longtime Greater Lowell stalwart Glenn Stewart, 71, who ripped it up at 7:25 pace to log in at 23:01, eclipsing the Septuagenarian course record of 23:38 set in 2016 by Joe Noonan.

So 2018 (70-79) champ and M70 (27:07) 2nd placer Fred Ross III, 75, schlepped all the way from Vernon, VT and slept in a flophouse hotel the night before for this? Well, yah…
Great Shepard’s Pie plus Good times and Good beer (Stellwagon and Fiddlehead) were enjoyed in the canopied upper deck of the Tinker’s Son post event and it was great to see so many Publicans back on the circuit (plus a plethora of newbies including the Barrel House Z Run Club).
Follow them to the 2nd Pub series race on Aug. 28—the BHZ 5K out of the brewery. See you there!
