NER 2022 Pub Series Malt & Hops Tour Mini Manifesto & Schedule

NER Pub Series 2022 Malt & Hops Tour Mini Manifesto

Like the gulls of Capistrano the Pub Series has returned (after a pandemic-induced 2-year hiatus) without a sponsor, with nothing but the good will and cheer of fellow publicans and that is everything.

There will be specially designed commemorative t’s for all who complete the 5-races in the Series to be handed out at Damiens (The King of Bars) during the last race on Oct. 30.

Check the NER website and click into “Pub Series” for the latest standings, race info, etc. Bi-weekly updates are also available via our free e-newsletter. “NER Express Sign-up” is at the top of our website homepage along with “Pub Series.”

The top-50 Open competitors (including all age groups) are scored ala XC: the 50th runner earns 1 point, the 1st place runner earns 50 points. Men & Women Masters, Seniors, Vets go 10-deep with scoring thru 70-79 and including Ozone Warriors (80+). Only Pubsters score but other runners can displace Series loyalists as there’s no way to track who’s in or out until after 2-3 races.

In terms of races needed to score: Miss one and have your fun, miss two and you’re through.

The Schedule

Sunday, May 22 – 22nd Evans Run 5K – A speedburner of a point to point certified course despite having a decent hill in the second mile and not a huge elevation loss. Still, the most precipitous downhill is to the finish. A women’s duel here made it onto the 2016 cover of NER.

Race benefits autism awareness and is run on the rural back roads of Norwell, ending near the Norris Reservation and just a short walk to the Tinker’s Son for free food (shepard’s pie in 2021!) and a craft brew. Kids races are back this year starting at 8:30 am with the Main Event at 9:30 am.

Course records are 15:58 by HFC’s TJ Unger in 2016 and 18:08 by Greater Lowell’s Kara Haas that same year.

Sunday, August 28 – The 4th BHZ 5K  – Run out of the Barrel House Z Brewery in Weymouth. A fast, certified out and back course with a lollipop turnaround. A craft brew for you in the taproom or on the brewery lawn. Cousins Maine Lobster food truck will be on hand.

Modest (like us) cash prizes to the top-3 men and women ($125 – $75 – $50) with awards in 8 age divisions from 19-under, 20-29 thru (80+). Plus, new in 2022: the Brewmeister Trophy for the top Brewery Run Club and Gargantua trophy for the largest team. Anyone signing up for a team still scores as an individual. Race benefits the Weymouth HS XC program (Coach Mike Miller and athletes will man the H20 stop).

Brewery teams are comprised of five teammates – all men, all women, a mixed combo, doesn’t matter as scoring will be age and gender based – so the fit 60 year old Kolsch sipping female could be more valuable than the stout Russian Imperial Stout quaffing 35 year-old male.

Course records are 15:41 by Valdir DeOliviera and 18:38 by HFC’s Christina Campbell, both set in 2019.
