Tropical Humidity & Cold IPA – Ooh La La – Pub Series Race No. 4, The Riverwalk Brewery IPA 5K

With the dew point tropical and anxiety mounting while non-activity perspiration flowed, the malt & hops express toed the line by the Riverwalk Brewery in Newburyport for Pub Series stop No. 4 —the Riverwalk IPA 5K.

While conditions remained oppressive, the good news is that Ann-Marie McDonald, Larry Cole and the whole octogenarian crew made it safely into the Brewery taproom before the skies exploded.

TJ Unger clinches silver.

Townie Steve Dowsett of Whirlaway would clinch the race in 16:14 with the ‘New Sheriff’ in town, past 3x Pub Series champ TJ Unger, placing 2nd in 16:32 and benefitting from some point displacement courtesy of Whirlaway’s Derek Noland (17:04) and Melrose’s Dom Defurio (17:05) before Series leader and defending champion Patrick Bugbee of CSU closed for 5th in 17:31.

This puts TJ 2-points up on Bugbee…but there’s still two races to go.

The Rieders twins are in striking distance but its game over as Nikki Nelson notches Pub win No. 4.

Despite the somewhat eerie presence of the 24 year-old Reiders twins (Hannah and Madeline) up front, HFC Pub Queen Nicole Nelson would move ahead at 1.5-miles and cement victory in 19:27 for a perfect 4-for-4 Tour record. The twins clocked in together at 19:30.

Just 2-points separate top Masters Jason Goldschmidt and Brian McCarthy (as TJ, 45, gets bumped up to the higher overall prize purse) and only one point separates the BAA’s Michael McGrane and CSU’s Kevin Delaney among Seniors.

Top Male Vet Dave Wessman and Series W60 bronze medalist Cassandra Clancy of the Marshfield RR.

Thirsty Irish Runner Dave Wessman rules among Vets and the same for Rich Paulsen among M70-79. Despite missing this race, Dave Pember still enjoys a 1-point lead over fellow octogenarian Phil Pierce of Maine.

Somerville’s Elizabeth Lennox (7th, 21:22) posted up as top Master and is the only scoring W40 remaining in the Series while sitting in 2nd place overall. Elizabeth currently sits 30 points ahead of 3rd place, and if she retains this position it’s worth $100 and cleans out the W40 division, where NER will thus save $50 (Win-Win!).

HFC’s Eileen Cakouros has a healthy lead over CSU’s Susan McNatt among Seniors (Sue missed a race) and HFC’s Mary McNulty currently is 2-points ahead of Warren, RI’s Marge Bellisle.

Well hello there – HFC’s Jeff Cahill & Pickle Power, Greg Picklesimer of SRR.

Whirlaway’s Jan Holmquist rules the world at W70 and Ann Marie McDonald ran overdressed and survived at age 83…as did Larry Cole at 89…and Holmquist did a bit more at 8:08 pace (25:12) at age 79!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next up, the blowout at the Barrel House Z Brewery. Cash prizes, live music from Dos Amigos, Hump the Wonder Camel and more – BHZ 5K
