Local Race Draws Big Names
The Boston Globe has called it “a track meet like no other.” Let’s Run.Com named it “quietly one of the better distance meets on the domestic circuit every year.”
The Adrian Martinez classic, now in its 15th year, is an understated, star-studded, meet where local runners of all ages mingle with elite athletes and Olympians, records are broken, and aging milers get to relive their collegiate glory days.
Held each June at a suburban six-lane track adjacent to a playground, the competition is named for a champion miler from Concord-Carlisle High School who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 22 and raises funds for his high school teams and a scholarship in his name.
There is prize money for the top four men and women finishers in the 800m, 1500m, and two-mile, with bonuses for meet records and American records. Last year, the top female in the 800m ran just over 2:00, and the top four males in the event finished within .4 seconds of one another, each running 1:48.
The top female finisher in the 1500 qualified for the Olympic trials, while the top male broke the meet record, finishing in 3:37.37.
There are also events for “regular” runners, including a 1 lap dash for 8-and-unders, and a family 4X400m relay. And in Adrian’s honor, there are mile races for every age.
This year’s meet will be held Sunday, June 7, at Emerson Field in Concord, Mass. Community races start at 4, and the high-performance sections begin at 6
